042-Eastern State Penitentiary

One of the cell blocks at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia PA. ESP was the first penitentiary (focused on redemption rather than punishment) in the US. It closed in 1970 and is now a museum. It was an Old Paint Paradise (pretty good for abandoned too except it would have been freezing in February). I chose this photo because I spent a lot of time in this corridor trying to figure out the best shot. I had to wait for the hallway to be clear of other visitors, find the right place to stand that so I did not get any of the exhibits on the walls and keep the photo sharp. I did not bring a tripod. You are allowed but have to pay an extra $10. I liked the pattern of lights on the floor and wanted to capture that. Basic edits in Lightroom including some desaturation. I did not attempt to adjust the lens distortion (shot this at 16mm) because I liked the sense of the walls closing in. I spent about 2 hours at ESP and got a lot of candidates. Earlier in the week I took some old paint shots around the house and played with them in Photoshop. The top candidates for this week from both sessions are posted at https://chrismaher.smugmug.com/Challenge2015/Week32/ - A more extensive collection of ESP photos can be viewed at https://chrismaher.smugmug.com/ESP-082015/ - If you ever find yourself in Philadelphia and are looking for somewhere interesting, I'd definitely recommend this place.
