I am not a bird photographer but I had fun this year visiting the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia. I am starting to see the appeal of this genre of photography. It's hard. You don't need special permission, waivers or passes to photograph them. You don't have to wait for a particular event.
